| Recent severe storms have impacted communities across Maryland, bringing damaging winds, heavy rainfall, fallen trees, and widespread power outages. As cleanup and restoration efforts continue, the Secretary Volunteer Fire Company encourages all residents to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and their families safe.
Power outages can create additional hazards long after the storms have passed. If your home is without electricity, remember these important safety reminders:
Stay away from downed power lines. Always assume they are energized and dangerous. Report them to your electric utility or call 911 if they present an immediate threat. Operate generators safely. Never use a generator inside your home, garage, basement, or any enclosed or partially enclosed space. Position generators at least 20 feet from your home, with the exhaust directed away from doors, windows, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible to reduce the risk of accidental fires. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help preserve food during an outage. Treat intersections with non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops and proceed with caution. Check on neighbors, especially elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, or anyone who may need additional assistance during extended outages.
Utility crews, emergency responders, and public safety personnel continue working around the clock to restore power and respond to storm-related incidents. Please be patient, avoid unnecessary travel in damaged areas, and allow crews the space they need to work safely.
