At approximately 6:37 p.m., Secretary Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to assist on a working structure fire in the 600 block of Race Street at Tienda Mexicana Velasquez in Cambridge.

The incident was initially reported as a van fire with extension into a commercial structure, with fire threatening both the business and the apartments located above. Due to the potential for rapid fire spread and the life hazard presented by the occupied building, additional resources were quickly requested.

Firefighters from multiple departments worked together to bring the fire under control, preventing further extension and protecting surrounding properties. The coordinated efforts of all responding agencies played a vital role in bringing the incident to a successful conclusion.

Among the agencies responding were:

Cambridge Rescue Fire Company
Cambridge EMS
Trappe Volunteer Fire Company
Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company
Neck District Volunteer Fire Company
Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Company
Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company
Secretary Volunteer Fire Company

Additional mutual aid departments, public safety agencies, and support personnel also responded or assisted throughout the incident.

The response came during a period of triple-digit heat indices, creating extremely challenging conditions for firefighters and EMS personnel operating in full protective equipment. Incidents like these demand not only technical skill and teamwork but also careful attention to firefighter rehabilitation and hydration to combat the dangers of heat-related illness.

Secretary Volunteer Fire Company extends its appreciation to every firefighter, EMS provider, law enforcement officer, dispatcher, and support agency that responded. The teamwork displayed throughout the incident exemplifies the strength of the mutual aid system and the commitment of our region's first responders to protecting lives and property.

Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the fire, including the business owners, residents, and families impacted by the incident.

Thank you to all who answered the call. Your professionalism, dedication, and service to our communities are deeply appreciated. Stay safe. 🚒❤️
